Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh Helps Clanns Launch Official Club History

Friday 23rd September was a landmark occasion for progressive north Tyrone club Clann na nGael as they celebrated the launch of a book detailing their history. The publication covers 90 years of G.A.A. activity in the Donagheady parish, starting with the first affiliated club Dunamanagh Red Hugh’s in 1921 and covering right up to the end of the 2010 season.
The book, co-written by Danny Devine and Niall “Barney” Conway, has the very original title ‘The Prairie Fires of Aughabrack and Dunamanagh’.
The launch night itself proved to be a tremendously enjoyable event which more than fulfilled the expectations of over 200 dedicated Gaels packed into Aughabrack Community Hall. Tickets had sold out well in advance and it was easy to see why as proceedings unfolded. The crowd enjoyed a helping of nostalgia as the night began with reminiscence involving some of the wonderful players and characters from the club’s teams of yesteryear. This was then followed by Moortown comedian Patsy O’Hagan who had the listeners in stitches before the appearance of the man most of those in attendance were desperate to see, the legendary and iconic Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh.
The former RTE commentator, widely regarded as the “voice of Gaelic games” was the guest speaker. He proceeded to regale the captive audience with some great tales from his time as the preeminent radio sports commentator in Ireland. He then presided over a Question and Answer session which went on into the early hours of the morning. By the time the night finished many famous moments were relayed and replayed, adding further to local G.A.A. folklore. For all those lucky enough to be present it was something that will live long in the memory.
